6 Interview Types You Must Know as a Candidate
6 Interview Types You Must Know as a Candidate Before you go on your interview, you should realize there are several common types of job interviews. You will definitely want to inquire what type of job interview you will be going on beforehand so you can best prepare for it. Dont be afraid to ask your recruiter what type of job interview will be conducted, as it serves both of you and the interviewer to know. In this article, I am going to discuss the six of the most common types of job interviews. 1) Traditional one on one job interview: The traditional one on one interview is where you are interviewed by one representative of the company, most likely the manager of the position you are applying for. Because you will be working with this person directly if you get the job, he/she will want to get a feel for who you are and if your skills match those of the job requirements. You may be asked questions about the experience on your resume, what you can offer to the company or position. Many times the interviewer will ask you questions such as Why would you be good for this job? or Tell me about yourself. The one on one interview is by far, one of the most common types of job interviews. 2) Panel interview: In a panel interview, you will be interviewed by a panel of interviewers. The panel may consist of different representatives of the company such as human resources, management, and employees. The reason why some companies conduct panel interviews is to save time or to get the collective opinion of panel regarding the candidate. Each member of the panel may be responsible for asking you questions that represent relevancy from their position. 3) Behavioral interview: In a behavioral interview, the interviewer will ask you questions based on common situations of the job you are applying for. The logic behind the behavioral interview is that your future performance will be based on a past performance of a similar situation. You should expect questions that inquire about what you did when you were in XXX situation and how did you dealt with it. In a behavioral interview, the interviewer wants to see how you deal with certain problems and what you do to solve them. 4) Group interview: Many times companies will conduct a group interview to quickly prescreen candidates for the job opening as well as give the candidates the chance to quickly learn about the company to see if they want to work there. Many times, a group interview will begin with a short presentation about the company. After that, they may speak to each candidate individually and ask them a few questions. One of the most important things the employer is observing during a group interview, is how you interact with the other candidates. Are you emerging as a leader or are you more likely to complete tasks that are asked of you? Neither is necessarily better than the other, it just depends on what type of personality works best for the position that needs to be filled. 5) Phone interview: A phone interview may be for a position where the candidate is not local or for an initial prescreening call to see if they want to invite you in for an in-person interview. You may be asked typical questions or behavioral questions. Most of the time you will schedule an appointment for a phone interview. If the interviewer calls unexpectedly, its ok to ask them politely to schedule an appointment. On a phone interview, make sure your call waiting is turned off, you are in a quiet room, and you are not eating, drinking or chewing gum. READ MORE: Top 5 Tips for a Successful Telephone Interview 6) Lunch interview: Many times lunch interviews are conducted as a second interview. The company will invite you to lunch with additional members of the team to further get to know you and see how you fit in. This is a great time to ask any questions you may have about the company or position as well, so make sure you prepare your questions in advance. Although you are being treated to a meal, the interview is not about the food. Dont order anything that is too expensive or messy to eat. Never take your leftovers home in a doggy bag either. You want to have your best table manners and be as neat as possible. You dont need to offer to pay, it is never expected for a candidate to pay at a lunch interview. Chew quietly and in small bites so you dont get caught with a mouthful of food when the recruiter asks you a question. So, now you have an idea of these six common types of job interviews. However, no matter what type of job interview you go on, always do your best to prepare for it the best you can ahead of time so you can do your best and show them the best of who you are. Simple One-Sheet Sells More Books Builds Brands - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Simple One-Sheet Sells More Books Builds Brands - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career All authors need one-sheets, formatted single-page PDFs that can sell more books contribute to building the authors personal brand. One of the best investments authors can make is to hire a graphic designer to create a one-sheet template, similar to the one at right. A one-sheet template establishes a format that you can use over and over again to promote your books. Templates are a key efficiency tool for brand-building success; they make it possible for you to design once, produce often! How youll benefit from a one-sheet template A well-designed template offers these benefits: Saves planning and writing time. A good template provides guidance as you write the copy. Instead of starting with a blank screen, the template helps you decide what to put where, and how many words you have to write. Saves time formatting the text. Most templates include predefined text styles for headlines, subheads, body copy, and captions. Instead of needing to open menus, choose typefaces and type sizes, you simply select one of the previously-formatted options in your softwares Text Style drop-down menu. Brand-building consistency. Templates make it easy for you to create a series of attractive, easy-to-read, brand-building marketing materials. A good template visually differentiates your marketing materials from those of your competition. Perfect for offline use. PDFs make it easy for prospects to download and print your marketing materials, often, sharing them with co-workers. Once created, you can use them to promoting your book and other services by including them with your presentation or speaker handouts. More than just books! Although one-sheets are primarily thought of as book marketing tools, once you create (or have created) a one-sheet template for your book, youll likely discover new uses for it. You can use the one-sheet template to promote information products like ebooks, workbooks, and videos; speaker materials like information sheets for meeting planners and descriptions of upcoming events; and one-sheet describing the different types of coaching and consulting services you offer. Anatomy of a one-sheet template Here are some of the design characteristics to pay attention to as you look at the sample one-sheet. Note: the example shows a title thats no longer available. Headline. The 3-line headline at the top of the page is long enough to describe the offer and the benefits that buyers will achieve. More than just your book title, it describes the promise behind the book title. Even though the type size is relatively small, the headline dominates the one sheet and leads the readers eyes to the text that follows. Subheads. The subheads at the top of the text columns guide the readers eyes to the columns and provide a context for reading the text. Layout. The one-sheet is based on a simple 4-column grid. The first column is empty, except for the photograph of the book plus a feature testimonial. The second column provides an overview of the book or topics main features and benefits. The third column provides supporting details, i.e., a table of contents. The fourth column provides proof, i.e., reader comments and quotes. Formatting details make a big difference. For example, the left margin of the headline is aligned with the beginning of the second column. This adds white space and reinforces the headlines relationship to the text. Notice that the top of the book cover is aligned with the x-height of the text to the right of it (not the height of the capital letters). Note the right-alignment of the caption. Finally, note that the width of the text in the featured quote is narrower than the screened background behind it which extends the full width of the column. Tips for creating your one-sheet template Here are some tips you might want to keep in mind as you create your own template: Typeface. Choose a typeface which reflects your other online and offline marketing materials, and use it consistently. Choose a sans serif typeface for headlines, subhead, and captions, and a serif typeface for body copy. Leading. Carefully adjust the leading, or line-spacing, of the text columns. Often single-line spacing is too tight, but double-line spacing is too generous. Choose a line spacing that looks right for your combination of typeface, type size, and line length. Paragraphs. Consider using extra space between paragraphs to indicate new paragraphs, rather than indenting the first line of new paragraphs. Extra paragraph spacing is often preferable when using narrow columns. Alignment. When working with narrow columns, avoid justified text, i.e., lines of equal length (which your software achieves by adjusting the word spacing in each line). Flush-left, ragged-right text concentrates white space at the ends of each line, adding visual interest. Hyphenation. Always hyphenate body copy, but monitor the hyphenation. Avoid 2, or more, lines in a row ending in hyphens. This is unsightly and often caused by using a type size too large for the column width. Make sure proper nouns are not hyphenated, and avoid splitting first and last names, or months, dates, and years on 2 lines. One-sheets are long term investments A good one-sheet template is an investment that will serve you for many years, simultaneously helping you sell more books while building your personal brand. Well-designed one-sheet templates can be adapted to sell a variety of products and services, while building your brand and supporting events like conferences, speeches, and workshops. How to Prepare for a Panel Interview
How to Prepare for a Panel Interview In recent interview preparation sessions with my clients, a majority of questions have come up around handling questions from a panel. As we discussed concerns, I compiled observations on what helped my clients and what they generously shared with me after successfully navigating panel interviews. Here are the top observations from our shared story: Understand the Purpose of a Panel Interview: These are considered time-efficient, allowing employers to determine how the candidate interacts with a diverse range of individuals, especially when the position reports to multiple supervisors and/or relates to diverse functional areas within the organization. These are also seen to provide valid information because a number of opinions and views are taken into consideration when making the hiring decision. Many times these are considered to be more rigorous, more culturally fair and more detailed because a candidate faces questions from experts from different parts of the organization, reflecting the varied interests of each panel member. There is a significant difference between a panel interview process and a group interview process. Specifically, group interviews might be conducted by your potential subordinates to look for supervisory style fit. So, how will you prepare? Who is on the Panel? Research job functions as it relates to the overall organizational mission and specifically your role. Use LinkedIn, the organizational chart, networks and even the HR contact to ask questions about your panel members. Understand clearly how your role will make the individual panelistâs job better by conducting research on how what you will do will help that person shine more in their function. Identify from the job description, how closely your role will intersect with that personâs function. Specifically, prepare by switching places with that personâs roleâ"if you were to look at your future role with a different pair of lenses, what would you see? Prepare stellar stories that have common elements to address issues common across all functional areas as well as that might address specific issues with laser-like focus to that particular department. Rapport Building: Research profiles via LinkedIn/organizational chart/Bios PRIOR to the interview. Pick a detail that might be interesting to bring up in your introduction, as appropriate. Engage with EACH member of the panel, during the introductions phase. Make eye contact, say their name aloud and repeat briefly their functional role; make this introduction count without rushing through it â"focus completely on this one individual before greeting the next person. Before the interview begins and people get seated, write down their names according to where they sit (the assumption here is you have asked permission to take notes through the interview) â" this reinforces your memory and allows you to use their names through the interview process. Answering Questions: TELL A STORY â" challengeâ"actionâ"resultâ"LINK to the position deliverables. Make initial eye contact with the person who asks you a question first and then, include others in your answer by scanning faces before returning to the person who asked the interview question. Use peopleâs names when answeringâ"this allows you to honor the person who asked the question. Remember to make your answer relevant to the different organizational roles. It is critical to personalize your answer to the panelistâs area of interest. Consider the perspective of the panelist asking you the question. Cross-reference a question with another one asked previously by a different panelist. An example â" âI am glad to expand on my earlier response to Ruthâs concern onâ¦â This strategy allows you to reinforce strong elements from a previous answer, showcases active listening skills and pulls all members into the conversation to listen to you with attention. Sometimes, panelists might work off a list of common or standardized questions â"the key is to pull the common threads from your answers together so that you are showing consistency across your answers. Much of the Preparation is the Same as One-to-One: Research â" always critical Stellar story telling â" engages people and makes them curious about you Active listening â" encourages dialogue Asking meaningful questions â" showcases interest and high level preparation Asking for the job â" helps you leave with the opportunity to address concernsâ"ask that questionâ"do they have concerns at this point in the conversation? Courteous follow-up â" personalize your comments to EACH panelist â"refer to their area of interest/function and make your thank-you relevant to their role My take on this you are in a sweet spot because this process is an opportunity to get a helicopter view of the organizational culture and dynamics. It is an outstanding opportunity to create visibility and credibility on a macro level. Why not enjoy the process? What has been your experience with panel interviews? Let us know in the comments below!

How to Sleep the Night Before a New Job CareerMetis.com
How to Sleep the Night Before a New Jobâ" CareerMetis.com So, youâve got the job of your dreams and youâre so excited about your first day that you canât fall asleep.Hoping that the excitement will pass by itself isnât a good idea. This may keep you up for too long, so you will wake up groggy and slow So, how do you get proper sleep before your first day at work?Easily! Here are 5 proven waysto score some good shut-eye. Hopefully, at least one of them will work for you.1) Get TiredevalAn enjoyable evening workoutis the easiest way to get proper sleep. It literally kills two birds with one stone:allows you to let go of intrusive thoughts;lets physical exhaustion do the job and make you sleepy.Note that some workouts are more beneficial for your sleep than others:Dynamic gym session.According to the National Sleep Foundation, lifting weights can be helpful for your sleepno matter what part of the day you dedicate to this activity. The main idea is to raise your body temperature and increase blood pressure. When you finish your trainin g, your body temperature and the levels of blood pressure start to decrease, thereby making you sleepy.Static exercises.Static exercises â" such as yoga, stretching, and pilates â" use your body weight instead of barbells and dumbbells. They have the same effect on your body parameters as the gym workout does, but they also relax stiff muscles, which may be beneficial for your sleep.Moderate pace jogging.Jogging is a monotonous activity and along with tiring you out and keeping you lean, it also has an antistress effect. Just choose a picturesque neighborhood and enjoy the views while you are running.Note that you need to allow at least a 1,5-2-hour gap between exercising and the actual bedtime so that you would go to bed completely relaxed and prepared to get sound sleep.2) MeditateevalObviously, your main goal is to wind down and switch off all your work-related excitement. You can leave it for tomorrow, when you hit the office full of energy and motivation. So, what can you do t o get a good snooze?Mindfulness, or guided meditation. The easiest one. Just download an app or a Spotify podcast with soothing ambient sounds and the voice guide and follow through.Breathing techniques.Controlled breathing is also a form of meditation, which is borrowed from yoga practices in Ancient India. But you can refer to modern techniques as well. The most common is the 4-7-8 method, and it may actually help you fall asleep in less than a minute, so itâs definitely worth a try.Muscle relaxation methods.evalProgressive muscle relaxation may not sound as a meditation method, but it is. In fact, you repeat the same steps: focusing on your muscles and using controlled breathing. So, the aim is to put a strain on a certain muscle group â" many people begin from the face muscles â" for 10 seconds. Then, relax the strained muscles for another 10 seconds and move further to the next group.Typically, it requires 1-2 minutes to feel completely relaxed and drift off. This method is used by American military veterans and allows them to sleep even in a noisy environment. You can also try visualization and imagine a peaceful place that can help you relax your mind. Visualization can work alone or when combined with other meditation methods, such as muscle relaxation.3) Refer to Sleeping AidsAnother way to enjoy a peaceful sleep is to use pills. The modern market can offer you hundreds of sleep aids that wonât make you dizzythe morning after and that are devoid of habit-forming mechanisms. Here are the most common of them:Melatonin.Melatonin pills contain a lab-made analog of your sleep hormone and can boost its production, which will help you fall asleep in minutes. Melatonin balances the circadian rhythms and provides relaxation for the brain and the body.Adaptogens.Adaptogenic herbs â" such as ashwagandha, rhodiola, and holy basil â" may help combat stress by reducing cortisol levels, and, as a result, anxious and intrusive thoughts.Glycine.Glycine is an amin o acid with potent sleep-promoting properties. In particular, it can increase the amount of NREM sleep and cool your down, which boosts melatonin production. Moreover, deep NREM sleep is more restorative, so you will wake up with a fresh head.Note that even though these are over-the-counter drugs, itâs still a good idea to consult with your doctor about taking them.evalNow, what you certainly donât need to dois try to go to bed earlier.Yes, youâve read that right. One night before work wonât make a difference to your usual sleeping schedule, but it can easily disrupt your shut-eye and leave you awake for longer than youâre used to. So, for a guaranteed sleep, just pop a pill and go to bed at your usual time.4) Serve a DinnerWhat you eat can also impact the quality of your sleep. Not only because when youâre full, you feel drowsy, but also due to the fact that some foods are more sleep-inducing than others.evalSo, hereâs what you may want to include in your sleep-promoti ng dinner meal:Fatty fish.Salmon, mackerel, and tuna combine the high amount of fatty acids and vitamin D. Both of these substances can promote sleep because they take part in the production of serotonin, which contributes to sleep quality.Bananas.Bananas are a great source of natural melatonin, so grabbing a fruit before bed may help you boost the levels of this hormone.Almonds.Almonds also can boost melatonin, but they are also high in magnesium and B vitamins, which are crucial for muscular and nervous system relaxation.Dairy.Milk and cottage cheese are rich in tryptophan, an amino acid that takes part in serotonin and melatonin synthesis.eval5) Do Something RelaxingAlong with meditation, self-care is one of the most efficient ways to manage stress and reduce excitement.Dedicating some time to yourself regularlymay consolidate positive association with serenity and relaxation in your brain. Thus, when you repeat that activity, your brain triggers the relaxation mechanism. Here are the rituals you can incorporate into your daily schedule:Take a bath. The warm bubbly bath provides relaxation for your muscles. Also, it warms up your body as the workout does, so when you slip into the bed, you start to cool down and become sleepy.Sip some tea.Chamomile or passionflower teas have pronounced relaxing properties and may contribute to easier shut-eye.Write your thoughts down.Writing practices are a therapeutic and soothing activity. You can write down your thoughts and expectations from the first working day and compare them to reality later.

7 College Skills You Can Actually Use At Work - CareerAlley We may receive compensation when you click on links to products from our partners. College teaches students more than just the material in their textbooks. It teaches lifelong skills that can help professionals be exceptional at what they do. Students who quickly grasp and learn how to manage the skills they are taught away from their reading and lectures have a better chance at success when they head to their first job. Here are seven essential skills students gain at college that they can actually use in the workforce. Clear and Concise Writing Those research papers that many students dread can actually help them prepare for the real world when they will have to submit status updates and reports. This skill is valuable as being able to communicate on paper in a clear and concise format can help professionals gain exposure among their colleagues and upper management that has the potential to lead to a promotion or better jobs.
